International Workshop for Outstanding Young Scholars in Engineering Management

2018

The “International Workshop for Outstanding Young Scholars in Engineering Management” was successfully held from June 30 2018 to July 03, 2018, by the Department of Construction Management of Tsinghua University. The workshop was held for the first time this year themed: Data Sensing and Analytics on Construction Engineering and Management. The young scholars invited for the occasion were: Prof. Pingbo Tang from Arizona State University, Prof. Jiayu Chen from City University of Hong Kong, Prof. Wilson Lu from the University of Hong Kong, Prof. Nora El-Gohary from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Prof. Xuesong Shen from the University of New South Wales, Prof. Patrick Zou from Swinburne University of Technology, Prof. Yihai Fang from Monash University, and Prof. Tao Wang from Central University of Finance and Economics. Also on the panel were Professor Lucio Soibelman from the University of Southern California and Professor Makarand Hastak from Purdue University. In addition, Prof. Dongping Fang, the party representative of the School of Civil Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering of Tsinghua University, Associate Prof. Nan Li, Associate Prof. Hongling Guo, Associate Prof. Wenzhe Tang, Associate Prof. Zhenzhong Hu and Jiarui Lin from Department of Civil Engineering attended the event as guests.

During the conference, outstanding young scholars from overseas universities together with teachers and students from the Department of Construction Management conducted various forms of exchanges, including academic reports, round-table discussions, project visits and surveys, enrollment publicity and a visit to the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture.

During the academic reports presented between June 30 to July 1, each scholar made a wonderful academic report on their own research. Prof. Lucio Soibelman gave a keynote speech on the design, construction and management of data-driven buildings and infrastructure; Prof. Makarand Hastak described the need for data analysis to improve the resilience of cities to cope with natural disasters; Prof. Fang Dongping shared the LCA (Leadership Culture Behavior) method based on construction safety management; Prof. Pingbo Tang introduced robust shutdown control of aging infrastructure based on human-network-physical system engineering; Prof. Xuesong Shen demonstrated real-time and autonomous 3D building mapping using unmanned aerial vehicles and on-board laser scanning; Prof. Jiarui Lin introduced the improvement of construction site inspection based on mobile devices and data analysis; Prof. Tao Wang presented the campus disaster response decision-making platform based on data analysis; Associate Prof. Nan Li introduced the research on the characteristics of individual emergency evacuation behavior in buildings using immersive virtual environment; Prof. Wenzhe Tang presented the current situation and challenges of sustainable hydropower development in China; Prof. Jiayu Chen introduced the construction safety management based on human-centered psychological sensing; Prof. Nora El-Gohary presented big data analysis of infrastructure systems; Prof. Wilson Lu introduced the use of architectural knowledge to enhance the application of artificial intelligence in urban digitization; Associate Prof. Hongling Guo demonstrated the construction management from virtual to reality; Prof. Yihai Fang introduced the intelligent construction based on network-physical-social system and Prof. Zhenzhong Hu demonstrated the monitoring data mining and analysis of the shield machine.

On the morning of July 2, at the roundtable meeting, the scholars presented their views on the challenges and opportunities in the field of data sensing and analysis in engineering construction management, the exchange and cooperation between universities in scientific research projects, and how to conduct doctoral research. At the same time, on July 2 and 3, the scholars also visited and investigated the construction site of the Bird's Nest and China Railway Construction Project. In addition, the sophomore and junior students of Tsinghua University were invited to attend an admissions seminar, followed by a visit to the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture.

This conference enhanced the participants’ understanding of data sensing and analysis in the field of engineering construction management. By means of academic reports, the importance of data sensing and analysis in the field of engineering construction management was discussed in a more comprehensive and in-depth way, highlighting the opportunities and challenges it faces. In addition, this event provided an effective exchange platform for outstanding international young scholars in the field of engineering management, and promoted academic cooperation between overseas universities, research institutions and the Department of Construction Management of Tsinghua University.
